WORD 4 THE WEEK

Jesus says,

“You are salt…. ”

Matthew 5:13a

Dear student, I suspect you have been called a number of things, but ‘salt’ is probably not one of them.

Isn’t it just like Jesus to call us a name which sounds so ordinary, but also confusing?

Doesn’t salt seem like such a little substance? Even ‘child’ of God gives seems bigger, more profound, than salt!

Yet, ‘salt’ is what Jesus calls the disciples sitting in the pew as he preached his sermon atop a mountain. Being called salt would just want to make the disciples to run right down the mountain and tell everyone their new name….. not!

However, we know salt has various characteristics which create different purposes: seasoning, preserving, cleansing, and yes, even putting out fires.

Jesus calls and sends disciples out as salt to season, preserve, and cleanse our world with God’s gifts of mercy, justice, peace, renewal, reconciliation, and all other good gifts of God’s Spirit Holy.

Dear student, Jesus calls you salt, so, where are you the salt of Jesus’ seasoning? When have you been salt for others? When have you been a recipient of Jesus’ seasoning by others?

‘You are salt’, Jesus said it, not me and it is what you are, not something you create.

Salt is what you are, so go shake the love of Jesus in your world!

Please pray with me: Jesus, you call these students salt and that is what they are. Season them with your compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, to be your salt in the world. Use their lives and saltness to flavor their worlds in such a way that others will be seasoned with your kingdom’s presence. amen

Held in God’s loving grip,

Pr. Barry+
